The eight sided centrepiece of Westport town was designed by Richard Cassels and James Wyatt in the 18th century. The pedestal in the centre has a statue of Saint Patrick as a young man. Six miles to the west is Croagh Patrick where the saint is reputed to have spent forty days fasting and praying for the people of Ireland.
