Kildownet Castle, Achill

Grainne Uaile (Grace O'Malley), the formidable chief of the O'Malley Clan, famous sea pirate and Queen of Connaught, in the sixteenth century, ruled the seas around Connaught from this castle along with many other minor fortresses which ringed Clew Bay.
