On Inishturk Island

The traditional kitchen of Michael and Katie O'Toole, Inishturk; the turf fire in the open hearth, the brightly painted dresser with crockery and the holy pictures and blessed statues that were so much a part of Irish kitchens up to the recent past. When Michael was a young man, he and his two brothers would empty their lobster pots into their currach (a traditional rowing boat made of tarred canvas stretched on a wooden frame), and would row 20 miles to Achill Island, sell their lobsters and row back again to Inish Turk their island home.
